What is Yoga?

"Yoga" is Sanskrit for yoke or union. It is a 5,000 year old practice of uniting body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is a multidisiplinary philosophy with 8 limbs:

  • Yama: how we relate to the world around us.
  • Niyama: how we relate to the inner world, our self.
  • Asana: discipline of the body, physical postures.
  • Pranayama: breath control.
  • Pratyahara: withdrawal of the mind from the senses.
  • Dharana: concentration.
  • Dhyana: meditation.
  • Samadhi: enlightenment, wisdom, oneness.

What does Yoga offer me?

Having a regular yoga practice can benefit you in many ways. Starting with the most noticable, yoga improves your body's balance, strength, and flexibility. It can help prevent arthritis and osteoporosis, lower blood sugar and blood pressure, fight off depression, calm the nervous system, and increase memory, focus, and coordination. The asana and pranayama boost immune function and lung capacity. Most importantly, it is putting some time aside in this busy world to focus just on you.  Yoga is about the self, loving the self, and learning about your true self. The more you commit to your practice, the more benefit you get.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a pairing of movement and breath. This practice is a moving meditation. It is an asana practice that becomes a dynamic flow, linking and transitioning with postures that create space on an inhale and decreasing space on an exhale. Both standing and sitting sequences are practiced along with inversions and arm balances. Breathwork and meditation are also taught.

Prenatal Yoga

This practice addresses the needs of pregnant women throughout all three trimesters of their pregnancy. Exercises are modified for each trimester, helping mom feel comfortable, relaxed, and healthy. The Prenatal Yoga class is safe for both mom and baby. Learning deep breathing in this practice aids mom with focus and concentration which will be a tool to her during labor and delivery. This gentler class helps to reduce fatigue and stress by promoting relaxation.
